'Captain America' Sequel Apparently May Not Hit Theaters Until 2014

Back in April we got the expected news that sequels for both Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger were already being developed. Since then, Thor 2 has been set for a summer 2013 release (along with Iron Man 3) with Betty Jenkins recently entering early talks to helm the thunderous sequel. However, when it comes to Captain America 2, we might be waiting a bit longer. The Playlist recently spoke with franchise star Chris Evans who said Marvel Studios and Disney, "may wait until 2014 until they release the next Cap. Marvel has a lot of balls in the air, they aren?t going to cannibalize their films.? Read on!

Of course, with The Avengers bringing the whole superhero team to theaters next summer and two of those team members heading to the big screen in their own features in 2013, it only makes sense that Cap wouldn't ...

CONTAGION

RYAN: So after seeing the new movie Contagion, I think a better title might have been How to Become a Germaphobe!

CAROLINE: [laughs] ...Without Really Trying?

RYAN: Exactly. I feel like one already; but I swear, it took all my strength not to hightail it to the nearest Bath & Body Works to stock up on instant hand sanitizers.

CAROLINE: Their stuff is a lil too fragrant for my taste.

RYAN: I love their new Halloween scents. Anyway, Contagion is pretty intense. I saw it with my pal Kimmy who was also into it.

CAROLINE: So tell me already - how was Gwynnie Paltrow?

RYAN: It's an ensemble piece overall and she's very good in this. It's a triple Academy Award winning Best Actress movie, directed by Steven Soderbergh, the man who brought us Traffic and Erin Brockovich.

CAROLINE: Among others... he's good. How was Kate Winslet? How did she look?

RYAN: This just in - she's amazing. And her American accent is just spot-on. She plays an MD who looks rather plain but I love her and I love even more Marion Cotillard who also plays an MD but looks a bit more glam. I wish her role had been bigger.

CAROLINE: And then there's the Matt Damon and Jude Law.

RYAN: The Matt was great. I never really give him that much credit on screen but he's really good. And it was cool seeing him re-teamed with Gwynnie. And Jude, what can I say? We know him to be so nice and he was terrific in this.

CAROLINE: They're all friends so that must have been fun for them. How does it compare to that Dustin Hoffman movie Outbreak?

RYAN: Well, ultimately, it's the same movie but much, much better; a better script and the casting is brilliant.

CAROLINE: I wanna see it but is it very gross?

RYAN: It has a few moments including one which I looked away from the screen but then, of course, I looked back just in time to see the grossness.

CAROLINE: Why does that always happen?!

RYAN: I nigh! I'm recommending this one. It's def cinematic.

Franco, McBride and Others Joining 'Jay and Seth vs. the Apocalypse'

Earlier this month we learned that the long-gestating apocalyptic comedy Jay and Seth vs. the Apocalypse starring Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel would go before cameras in February with Rogen also working as a co-director with his Superbad and Neighborhood Watch writing partner Evan Goldberg. At the time, Rogen said, "It's now much more than just Jay and Seth -- there's many other people versus the apocalypse now." Well, Rogen recently spoke to MTV and revealed that Danny McBride, James Franco, Jonah Hill and Craig Robinson will all be around for the end of the world as well. Read on!

Rogen added that, "We all play ourselves." I'm not sure if that means they'll be playing the celebrity versions of themselves, or simply regular on-screen versions in the same way that Jonah Hill, Jason Segel, Jay Baruchel, Martin Starr and Rogen played some version of themselves in Knocked Up. Trailer Tuesdays!

RYAN: The trailer for Drive is exciting but ultimately, it appears to be just about a dude who is a terrific driver in dangerous situations.

CAROLINE: Well, it also has a really great cast. We love Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan. Though it does look like a total boy movie.

RYAN: True. I actually really like the end of the trailer with the montage that plays over the ironic music.

CAROLINE: That part is cool.

RYAN: It does look like a fast-paced flick though; so if the trailer grabs you, it's prob one to catch on the big screen. Check it out:

CAROLINE: Also new this weekend is I Don't Know How She Does It Starring Carrie Badshaw.

RYAN: Can she even make a movie outside of NYC? Or does she have some sort of contract with the Statue of Liberty?

CAROLINE: [laughs] I'm sure I don't know. But let's be honest- this movie is right up my alley. I love a romcom and I can never get enough SJP.

MR. POPPER'S PENGUINS

CAROLINE: I'm never in the mood for a kids' movie and although I like Jim Carrey, I was thankful not to have to attend this one. How did you like it?

RYAN: I liked it very much, thank you. It's very well done and entertaining.

CAROLINE: You're such a big kid.

RYAN: I am. And I brought my friend Aimee with me, who also thought it was great.

CAROLINE: Family films appeal more to some than others. How was Jim? Did he do his typical schtick?

RYAN: You know, he never turns me off the way Will Ferrell or Ben Stiller do.

CAROLINE: Yeah and to go from the terrific performance in last year's I Love You Phillip Morris to this - he certainly is versatile.

RYAN: I've always liked him. And there are other greats in the cast like Sir Angela Lansbury.

CAROLINE: [laughs] Don't you mean Dame? Is she a Dame?

RYAN: I don't think she is, but she should be, right? And Carla Gugino plays Jim's ex in this and she's always good. She's striking.

CAROLINE: I do tend to enjoy her. So what's up with the penguins in this movie?

RYAN: They're so friggin' cute and funny. I think they're mostly CGI but the effects are so realistic it really doesn't matter. And it's not just a kids' movie. There's a little bit of romance in there too.

CAROLINE: Does the romance include one or more of the penguins?

RYAN: [laughs] No. It's of the human varietal. Another thing I immensely enjoyed in the film is that they filmed at Tavern on the Green, which sadly, is no more in Central Park.

CAROLINE: Oh that's cool.

RYAN: I loved that place and it was such an iconic part of NYC that it was so nice but also sad to see it so beautifully shot in this movie.

CAROLINE: I love seeing New York in movies... in New York.

RYAN: It's just over an hour and a half so it's the perfect length. It's clever with a nice message and very, I have to say it... cute. I didn't find it at all tedious and it's just a fun, nice kids movie that fits in well among the summer blockbuster landscape.

CAROLINE: I doubt it will do gangbusters numbers but you never know.

RYAN: At least it will engage and entertain the adults as well as the kids in the audience.

CAROLINE: Sounds like a win-win.

R.I.P. - 'Happy Gilmore' Actress Frances Bay Passes Away at Age 92

Even though Ben Stiller put her through hell in one of the worst nursing homes on film, actress Frances Bay and her sweetness prevailed as the charming grandmother in Happy Gilmore starring Adam Sandler. However, we're sad to hear from The Huffington Post that the veteran actress of film and TV passed away last week at age 92 after being diagnosed with pneumonia in a Los Angeles area hospital. Bay started her acting career in the 1930's on the radio before WWII, but it wouldn't be until the 1970's that she would return to acting in various roles on "Happy Days" as well as "The Dukes of Hazaard." Read on.

While her most famous turns are likely in Happy Gilmore and an episode of "Seinfeld" in which she fought with the titular comedian over a loaf of bread, Bay also appeared in Arachnophobia, Twins, Blue Velvet and Big Top Pee-Wee. The ...

TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON

RYAN: Am I the only person who thinks the title of this movie is a ripoff from Broadway's Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark?

CAROLINE: You may be. But now that you mention it, I kinda see it. So how was it?

RYAN: Pretty horrendous. I saw this one with Jonathan and he put it best - it's all over the place! From the story, to the script to the action and just everything, there was zero cohesiveness. You would have slept through the whole thing.

CAROLINE: You're probably right. How was Shia?

RYAN: I like him so I liked his acting scenes. I liked a lot of the casting actually, but they're all wasted in such a sorry excuse for a blockbuster. It's the third film in the franchise and it's boring and unnecessary.

CAROLINE: That sounds harsh but I think I'd probably agree with you. Did you miss Megan Fox?

RYAN: No. There's a replacement hot girl and she's fine. But I love seeing Frances McDormand, John Malkovich and Patrick Dempsey on the big screen, in 3D, but just not in this movie.

CAROLINE: What about Josh Duhamel?

RYAN: Yes he's back but barely there. It's, like, very easy to not pay attention to this movie. You know what's going on but the story is so convoluted, it's actually difficult to follow. The action drags on so long that you get completely desensitized to it.

CAROLINE: I can only imagine.

RYAN: There were a couple cool action and effects sequences but the rest were mostly useless. And it really blurs the genres.

CAROLINE: How so?

RYAN: Some transformers were so cheesy they make it feel like a Muppet movie and then the rest of the film is like a tween action movie so it just keeps hopping back and forth without ever committing one way or the other.

CAROLINE: Sounds disastrous.

RYAN: Simply put, it is. Don't waste your money... more importantly... you time.

Steven Spielberg Dishes Details on 'Lincoln' and the Status of 3D Film

GREEN LANTERN

RYAN: I had very low expectations going into this movie because he's not Batman or Superman and we were so underwhelmed by Thor that I wasn't hoping for much.

CAROLINE: ...and?

RYAN: I loved it! I'm, like, as into this as I was X Men: First Class recently. It's an excellent, and excellently entertaining, film.

CAROLINE: Say that three times fast.

RYAN: [laughs] I swear, Green Lantern has one of my favorite origin stories. I was totally into all the other-wroldliness, which we detested in Thor, and it's totally Top Gun meets comic book hero.

CAROLINE: I don't think I'd care.

RYAN: No, you really would have liked this too. It's as exciting and cool as any good superhero movie but then also felt so much more fresh; maybe because it's not a character we know so well. But even all the other story constructs, like, the love story, the good versus evil and the plot... all very engaging and nice.

CAROLINE: How was the general reaction in the audience?

RYAN: Great - there were some really intense and exciting moments and it's fun being in the big, dark audience at those times. And the villain is actually really scary.

CAROLINE: And this is in 3D. Was it a waste?

RYAN: Surprisingly no. I saw this with Jonathan and he agreed it's one of the better 3D movies since the whole digital thing started... which bodes well for Harry Potter's final film next month, also in 3D... I'm so hoping it looks great!

CAROLINE: I know you can barely stand waiting for that anymore. How was Blake Lively?

RYAN: She was good. She certainly does her best Lois Lane. I was excited to see Angela Bassett in it and also Tim Robbins.

CAROLINE: What about Peter Sarsgaard and Mark Strong?

RYAN: OMG I love Mark Strong. He's, like, my favorite snaggle-toothed actor. And Peter's very good in this. He gives a subtle, nuanced performance that is impressive.

CAROLINE: I've always liked him.

RYAN: The music is good and it's just under two hours and you have to stay at least part way through the credits.

Exclusive Machine Gun Preacher: Michael Shannon Speaks to Movie Fanatic

Michael Shannon plays a big role in the electric film that is Machine Gun Preacher that also features a career best performance by his co-star, Gerard Butler. Shannon provides an emotional anchor to Machine Gun Preacher as Donnie and he talks exclusively about working with Butler and the challenge of making a powerful film that qualifies as an audience must-see. Every powerful film worth its weight needs a ying and yang and Machine Gun Preacher has it in Shannon and Butler.

Gerard Butler and Michael Shannon in Machine Gun Preacher
We are catching up with Shannon for an exclusive interview at the Toronto Film Festival. The Oscar nominated star of Revolutionary Road, the Emmy-winning Boardwalk Empire and the recently cast General Zod of the Superman reboot Man of Steel is sitting back at the Fairmont York Hotel after recently landing at the Canadian Mecca of all things film. He talks about anything and everything when it comes to his ever-building illustrious career and why the story of the real Machine Gun Preacher -- Sam Childers -- qualified as a must-do for his next film. For those who aren’t aware, Childers famously quit drugs, found God and dove into the Sudan civil war building orphanages for thousands of displaced kids while defending them with, yes, a machine gun, from those who are destroying that African nation.

Movie Fanatic: What do you think it is about the Toronto Film Festival that gets such talent and quality films?

Michael Shannon: I think with any festival, it’s a matter of time. Seems like Toronto has made a huge commitment to this festival for a number of years and it keeps growing. It seems to be a great meeting point for people all over the country and all over the world. It’s a nice intersection that has a nice worldly feel to it.

Movie Fanatic: What aspect of the Machine Gun Preacher story most resonated with you?

Michael Shannon: It’s hard not to be compelled by Sam’s story. I can’t think of anybody who has put their money where there mouth is, more than he has -- also, the opportunity to work with Marc (Forster, director). The genesis of it is Marc reaching out to me and saying he wanted to work together on this with me. He’s made so many amazing films. Also, the dynamic of the relationship between Sam and Donnie, a lot of times I’ve played characters who are alone or loners, so it was nice to get an opportunity to explore a buddy dynamic, even though it starts out in a pretty nefarious place. It’s still very, ultimately, touching to me -- the journey they go on together and then, inevitably, they grow apart.

Movie Fanatic: When you have a film based on a true story, in terms of approaching a role, is meeting the real person important? Or at the end of the day, is it about the words on the page?

Michael Shannon: Well, it’s different with this instance. For this particular story, I thought it was important to meet Sam, first and foremost. Donnie’s not really based on one particular friend. Although he did have one buddy that he was closer to than any other. That buddy is not here anymore, so there really wasn’t anybody to talk to except for Sam to get his remembrances and give a sense of how much those friendships meant to him. I think regardless of how much you get to meet people that are part of the story you’re telling, ultimately, it’s informed by the screenplay and the director’s vision.

Movie Fanatic: What was the most challenging aspect of making the film or even wrapping your head around this character?

Michael Shannon in Machine Gun Preacher
Michael Shannon: Early on in the story, we have some really intense scenes doing some really crazy stuff. It’s hard to get to that place out of the clear blue sky, particularly on a film set. You’re not actually doing these things, but there is a real rush of adrenaline that would come with going on these adventures. Also, incorporating the drug aspect into it is a mystery to me. It’s not something I’ve ever had experience with. For example, when we were shooting the scene where we rob the crack house, that’s very far from my realm of experience, but it’s helped by the fact that they found an incredible location that really was pretty damn scary. There wasn’t a lot of art direction going on at that place [laughs]. That place was for real. It helped plug us in to that experience. Also it was a challenge to play a character who changes so much and then returns to that bottomed-out place that he’s at. That’s a big journey. It’s a big rise and a big fall. The movie isn’t about Donnie, it’s not like there is a lot of time to lay that out. So you have to make sure that each little moment is specific and really detailing where he is on that journey.

Movie Fanatic: You mentioned the adrenaline, it’s an emotional shoot. Was it hard to turn that off at the end of the day, or was the end of the day more about working towards that next day?

Michael Shannon: Doing scenes like the ones I mentioned, usually at the end of the day, you’re pretty wiped out.

Movie Fanatic: I would imagine.

Michael Shannon: For me, there would be instances where I had a stretch of time off, I wasn’t doing that every day. I’d imagine it was much more difficult for Gerard to turn it off. He was on screen every day, carrying it on his shoulders. I was able to pop in and out of it without too much residual damage.

Movie Fanatic: And what about working with Gerard? The chemistry between two actors can be like a great volley in a tennis match. How was he to volley with?

Michael Shannon: He’s a real smart fellow. He really understood that in order to get that dynamic going as soon as possible, he had to be very approachable. I think he is inherently a very charming guy. He doesn’t put on any airs. Even with the extras shooting in Detroit -- there were a lot of people who showed up who were huge fans of his -- he was always so welcoming and kind to anybody who wanted to say hi or get an autograph. It made it easy to want to be his buddy. It would have been hard to manufacture that if he was standoff-ish or kept to himself. It would have been understandable if he wanted his own space, he has huge shoes to fill. He had enough energy to be accommodating to other people while at the same time playing this incredibly intense role.

Movie Fanatic: As you were coming up learning your craft, were there acting idols that you looked to as inspiration?

Michael Shannon: Oh yeah, I don’t think it would be anybody out of left field. One of my favorite actors is Jimmy Stewart. It always amazed me how this one man could be the lead in Capra films and Hitchcock films at the same time working in a different atmosphere. The same fellow could be the same lead in It’s a Wonderful Life and Vertigo, that’s about as good of an example of range as I can think of in an actor…

Movie Fanatic: Not to mention his Westerns…

Michael Shannon: Yeah, his Westerns too. I was always in awe of his ability to adapt to different situations.

Michael Shannon in Revolutionary Road
Movie Fanatic: I know that actors and performers don’t do what they do for awards. But, where does the Oscar nomination fit for Revolutionary Road in your mind?

Michael Shannon: It was thrilling. It was a little bit bittersweet because I felt like the film deserved more nominations than it got. Although I was glad Kate was there and she did win. She’s probably one of the greatest actresses I’ve ever worked with. I was a huge fan of that book. That whole process began with me trying to get an audition. I didn’t even know they were making it until I read it in a newspaper. To go from that to be sitting there in that theater that night, it was a pretty epic journey.

Dream House Clip: Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz's House of Horror

Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz move into their Dream House and as we see in a newly released clip from the film, maybe the word “dream” should be replaced with “nightmare.”

Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz in Dream House
The new clip from the Universal Pictures film takes us inside the new home of Weisz and Craig as they find that everything dreamy about their home may have a sinister past.

Movie Fanatic would see anything Daniel Craig stars in, and Rachel Weisz as well for that matter. Witnessing the real-life couple as an onscreen couple with a haunted house-feeling film is giving us chills already.

Universal’s new scene from Dream House is called Who is Peter Ward? It is a question whose answer will haunt the entire film, we have a feeling.

Dream House opens everywhere September 30 and as much has been revealed in the film’s trailer and clips such as the one below, do not doubt that there is much more than meets the eye in any preview from the directing talent of Jim Sheridan (In the Name of the Father and My Left Foot).

Brad Pitt and Moneyball Land on SI Cover

Brad Pitt has achieved more than his fair share of dreams, yet the actor had room for one more this week as he appeared on the cover of the nation’s most popular sports magazine. “I was just happy to do Sports Illustrated,” Pitt said in his SI interview. “To do something other than the fashion-y things, for something I respect, is much more fun.”

Brad Pitt's Moneyball SI Cover
Pitt stars in Moneyball as Billy Beane, the General Manager of the Oakland A’s, who famously took a chance on players who were undervalued and turned them into a playoff contender that also set records considered untouchable by baseball experts.

Moneyball also stars Jonah Hill (don’t miss our exclusive video interview with him from the Toronto Film Festival September 20), Philip Seymour Hoffman and Chris Pratt.

Pitt told SI writer Austin Murphy he was a little ashamed about how little he knew about the national pastime when he took the role of Beane. “I’m amazed they let me do this movie,” Pitt said. “Baseball and I didn’t get along that well.”

Whether it is a sports film or his work on flicks such as The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Pitt is drawn to a certain type of emotional pull. “I’m a sucker for the underdog story,” he added. Pitt went on to clarify that he didn’t, in many ways, see Moneyball as strictly a baseball movie, as it transcends sports. “What we were trying to do is tell an unconventional story in the Trojan horse of a conventional baseball movie.”

Also don’t miss our exclusive video interview with the film’s director Bennett Miller on September 20 as Movie Fanatic also takes you to the front row of Pitt’s Toronto Film Festival press conference for Moneyball, debuting on September 21.

Surprise 8-Minute Trailer for Fincher's 'Dragon Tattoo' Being Screened

Earlier this week I received a mysterious email alerting me that there was a screening of Rod Lurie's Straw Dogs remake on Wednesday night that I really needed to attend. I had no clue what to expect, but was surprised to find before the film an 8-minute long promo trailer for David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo featuring Trent Reznor's score and tons of stunning Fincher footage from the remake. The film's story is incredibly complex, based on Stieg Larsson's novels, and the full trailer introduces a lot of the characters and elements of that story before getting into flashes of scenes with a pounding score at the end.

We've already featured one trailer for this film a few months ago, but it was labeled a teaser and featured a badass version of "Immigrant Song." This new full-on 8-minute trailer for Dragon Tattoo features Trent Reznor's new score and ...

Gosling, Gordon-Levitt or Skarsgard May Be 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.'

With frequent Steven Soderbergh collaborator George Clooney dropping out of the director's big screen adaptation of the 60s TV series The Man from U.N.C.L.E., the hunt is on for someone to step into the vacated role of Napoleon Solo ,originally played by Robert Vaughn. While no names have surfaced to replace Clooney, a shortlist has been circulating with the actors desired to play agent IlyaKuryakin, another member of U.N.C.L.E (United Network Command for Law Enforcement), first played by David McCallum. Apparently Ryan Gosling, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Alexander Skarsgrd are on the list.

Much like the original series, the film will be a buddy movie with action and comedy combining in the same fashion as Lethal Weapon, but with a 60's setting. Although the aforementioned trio of actors sounds like great options, The Wrap points out that the shortlist includes some 20 actors to fill the role of the younger agent who ...

BAD TEACHER

RYAN: I didn't get to attend the Bad Teacher screening a few weeks ago, but I love that you shelled out your own $13 to see it.

CAROLINE: Make that $13.50, honey.

RYAN: Are you serious?

CAROLINE: Ridiculous, right? But I wanted to check it out because I enjoy the cast - Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel, Justin Timberlake, Phyllis from The Office and the very funny Lucy Punch.

RYAN: And did it deliver?

CAROLINE: It definitely made me laugh out loud several times. I saw it in a pretty empty theater so it's hard to gauge the comedy level since there was no one else to LOL with. But I was amused.

RYAN: How was JT?

CAROLINE: Honestly, I'm still on the fence with him as an actor. He's fine, but he still feels a little stiff to me, like he's trying too hard or something. He's not terrible, but he's not the world's most natural actor.

RYAN: I tend to agree. What about the rest of the cast?

CAROLINE: They're all good. I totally forgot that Lucy Punch was in it so that was a pleasant surprise; and you'd never know she's British.

RYAN: She's a true chameleon that way.

CAROLINE:
The redband trailer was so great for this movie and it does deliver on a lot of punch lines, but some of the profanity felt gratuitous. Like, isn't it funny to have a hot blond saying all these nasty words? It still made me laugh, but the comedy felt a little forced sometimes.

RYAN: Do you get to see Cameron and JT make out?

CAROLINE: No, but they have a dry humping scene if you must know.

RYAN: How random! I'll have to see that for myself someday.

-- BOTTOM LINE --

CAROLINE: It's a funny movie, but nothing spectacular. I'm glad I saw it because I like the cast a lot, but it's not a must-see summer comedy. I think Bridesmaids is going to be the best comedy of this summer, LBH. But you'd be happy to catch Bad Teacher on cable some lazy weekend.

Footloose Video: Inside the Line Dance Sequence

Paramount has released a new behind the scenes clip from Footloose that gives audiences an insight into capturing the always tricky line dance sequence. Footloose is launching for a new generation based strongly on the 1984 classic starring Kevin Bacon.

Julianne Hough Dances in Footloose
“I saw Footloose in my hometown theater when I was 13 years old and it rocked my world,” said director Craig Brewer.

“It was a teenage rebellion movie that explored the struggles of faith and family in a small town, and it had an awesome soundtrack. I can promise Footloose fans that I will be true to the spirit of the original film. But I still gotta put my own Southern grit into it and kick it into 2011. It's going to be a blast!”

The producer of the original, Craig Zadan, talks about history repeating itself with Footloose 2011.

"When we discovered Kevin Bacon in 1984, we were both excited and gratified -- and also knew the chances of ever duplicating that effort was a million to one shot. Decades later Kenny Wormald proved history could repeat itself,” said Zadan. The man who inherited Bacon’s dancing shoes first dazzled in an Oscar nominated Terrence Howard film.

“We've wanted to work with Brewer ever since we saw Hustle & Flow,” added Zadan. “His fresh and contemporary vision will bring Footloose to a whole new generation of moviegoers when the movie opens in 2011."

Thanks to Paramount for the following clip to get you excited for cutting Footloose in October. Limber up those legs, it’s time for line dancing.

The Help: Helping You to See Your Life Isn?t That Bad

In the meteoric rise of Emma Stone’s star, it is a testament to the sort of versatile person she is in choosing the role of Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan in Tate Taylor’s The Help (based on the novel by Kathryn Stockett). SUPER 8

CAROLINE: I'm a huge fan of J.J. Abrams and all of his work. I've seen all of his TV shows and have been looking forward to this movie but had to miss the press screening for it. How was it?

RYAN: It's excellent. It's seriously good and more than anything, it's a love letter from J.J. to Steven Spielberg, who produced it. And I saw it with my friend, Jay Jay, which was special and coincidental.

CAROLINE: [laughs] Okay. So is it very derivative of a Spielberg movie?

RYAN: Well yes, but in the best way. It's also derivative of LOST but, of course, only to those who watched and look for it.

CAROLINE: I'm dying to ask you what the thing in the trailer turns out to be but you can't give anything away and ruin it.

RYAN: We don't do spoilers so I can't say; but here's what I will: The movie is very exciting. It's a little slow in parts but when it's moving, it's brilliant. And it's so well cast.

CAROLINE: I know Dakota's little sister, Elle Fanning, is in it, but anyone else we care about?

RYAN: Not really. And it's cool that way - you feel the sort of small town-ness about it and are swept into caring about this little gang of kids from the get-go.

CAROLINE: I don't love kids movies but this definitely seems to have an edgier, cooler vibe to it.

RYAN: It's 100% an adventure and I love the whole Super 8 theme that they're making this little movie, and everything, and it's all just really well done and exciting. And some of the shots are pure genius. The effects are not anything too new but definitely still make quite an impact.

CAROLINE: And it's not in 3D.

RYAN: No. It's old-fashioned, American, classic, summer blockbuster.

CAROLINE: And does it have a classic music theme like ET?

RYAN: The soundtrack and score are both brilliant. It takes place in 1979 so the set design, the cars, the hair and costumes are all very period-appropriate and fun to see.

CAROLINE: I think I really would have liked this one. I'll have to make a point in seeing it.

RYAN: And please... See it in the theater. In the big, dark atmosphere it just totally heightens the experience. Jay Jay and I even grabbed each others elbows a couple times. It's the perfect movie for the new generation who didn't see ET, Jurassic Park, or The Goonies. Those are all still must see for everyone but this is one to add to that list of great movies.
