Christian Bale Joins the Ranks of Zhang Yimou's 'Nanjing Heroes'

Though audiences are looking forward to his final turn as Batman in Chris Nolan's highly anticipated sequel The Dark Knight Rises, it looks like Christian Bale is looking at his future beyond the Caped Crusader. At a press event in Beijing (via THR) it was announced that Christian Bale is starring in the tentatively titled Nanjing Heroes, the next film for director Zhang Yimou (Hero). The story, based on Yan Geling's novel The 13 Women of Nanjing, will see Bale as a priest who shelters a group of prostitutes and female students in his church during the 1937 wartime atrocity known as "The Rape of Nanking" by Japanese troops.

Throughout the violent invasion, hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians and surrendered soldiers were murdered along with anywhere from 20,000-80,000 women being raped by the Imperial Japanese Army. As for Bale's casting in the story, Zhang says, "I met Christian in America ...

Trailer Tuesdays!

RYAN: The week between Christmas and New Year's is notoriously slow for new releases, and this week is no exception. Howe'er, there are a few indies coming out in limited release tomorrow that we should discuss.CAROLINE: Let's start with Blue Valentine, one of my most anticipated movies of the year. It co-stars Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling, and it's been talked about since making a huge splash at Sundance.RYAN: I really like both these actors and have high expectations for this one. There seem to be a lot of quite relationship movies this season, and this is one if the most buzzed about. It looks intense. CAROLINE: Very intense. I think Michelle Williams is crying in almost every scene of the trailer. It's about a couple and their courtship and then ultimate demise of their marriage. I hope it's not a major weeper.RYAN: It certainly could be. But these two are such huge acting talents that I can't imagine not seeing this movie.CAROLINE: Oh, I'm totally in! I can't wait for it. Watch the trailer here: RYAN: Next up is a movie from British director Mike Leigh, Another Year. CAROLINE: I'm dying to see this movie! I don't know that much about it, but I always enjoy Mike Leigh films. And one of the supporting actresses, Lesley Manville, is getting raves for her performance.RYAN: This movie looks like it could either be great or totally boring. I see old people.CAROLINE: [laughs] Well, it's also got Jim Broadbent, who I know you loved in Moulin Rouge! I think it looks great, albeit slow and small. I want to give it a shot. Check out the trailer here: RYAN: Finally, there's the new Javier Bardem movie Biutiful, which I feel like I've been hearing about all year. CAROLINE: Oh Javier! He's one of my favorite hot men in Hollywood. And this movie is from the director Alejandro Gonzlez Irritu who also made Babel and 21 Grams, both excellent movies.RYAN: I like Javier but you definitely have to be in the mood for a foreign film to get into this one, let's be honest. Maybe they'll remake it as an English language movie and then I'll watch it. Just kidding.CAROLINE: I hear you. Foreign films aren't always my #1 pick, but I'd like to see this one because of Javier and the director's past great movies. But this trailer doesn't really give you much of a sense of what this movie's about. There's a chinless woman who keeps popping up and virtually no dialogue.RYAN: I can't tell what's going on. There's a kid, and Javier Bardem talks about dying, or not dying. It looks a little weird.CAROLINE: I like the idea of seeing Javier do a movie in his native tongue though. This one isn't at the top of my list, but I plan to check it out at some point. Watch the trailer here: Cheeky & Fresh Movie Reviews

2011 Golden Globes Nominations

RYAN: This time of year is such a highlight for our most passionate subject. We're not even coming down from the high of the Critics' Choice Movie Awards nominations yesterday and already we're slapped, cold, across the face with the 2011 Golden Globe noms.CAROLINE: And we love it! But I have to admit, some of the nominations are an absolute joke! I mean, The Tourist - Best Comedy? Come on!RYAN: My jaw almost hit the floor when that was announced. It's lit'rally absurd, along with the acting noms for Angelina and Johnny.CAROLINE: The Hollywood Foreign Press probably just liked that the movie was shot in Europe.RYAN: Shutter Island was also shut out again and it was one of our favorite movies of the year.CAROLINE: Such a bummer. And I'm sorry, but Michael Douglas is only nominated because of the C word. And I'm not talkin' about a cable TV series.RYAN: [laughs] Rude. But true.CAROLINE: And also missing - True Grit.RYAN: Once again, the cred goes to the critics. Lydia Hearst-Shaw Sending Up Lindsay Lohan for a New Comedy

If you've never heard of Lydia Hearst-Shaw, she's essentially a non-slutty, less publicized version of Paris Hilton. Great-granddaughter of publishing giant William Randolph Hearst, the heiress has more fame to her name than being the offspring of a historical media man. Aside from working as a journalist (writing for Page Six of The New York Post), she's more well-known as a model (appearing in Vogue, GQ and more) and most recently, acting roles in "Gossip Girl" and a couple low profile indie films like The Last International Playboy. Now The New York Post reports the heiress is taking aim at troubled Hollywood starlet Lindsay Lohan for her next role.

Apparently Hearst-Shaw will lead a screwball comedy called Dogs in Pocketbooks in which she'll play a comic character based on Lohan and her publicized trials and tribulations with fame. Screenwriter Charles Casillo revealed, "Lydia will play a bratty movie goddess in and ...

'Toy Story' Short Featuring Barbie and Ken is Attached to 'Cars 2'?

Shortly after the charming yet tear-jerking Toy Story 3 hit theaters, director Lee Unkrich revealed that the farewell to Andy's toys didn't mean the characters wouldn't be returning. While Toy Story 4 seemed to be unlikely, the director said the traditional Pixar short playing before Cars 2 would feature some of the Toy Story characters. Well, now Digital Spy has noticed a recent Twitter update from Disney animator Floyd Norman saying, ?Saw the Pixar 'Hawaii' short. Cute. Ken and Barbie want to go to Hawaii. I don?t know what it?s gonna be attached to. Fun stuff, however.? So it sounds like there will be a Hawaiian adventure before Cars 2!

This isn't exactly official yet, but putting two and two together, this definitely seems like a safe bet. So when Cars 2 hits theaters on June 24th, 2011, it looks like we'll have the return of a couple franchise in the ...

THE FIGHTER

RYAN: The Fighter is a very Oscar worthy film starring Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale as brothers, and in my opinion... the best movie of the year.CAROLINE: Whoa! I'm amazed to hear you say that given that you almost couldn't even be bothered to attend the advanced screening.RYAN: Well, you had told me that the acting was phenomenal but that the movie was just another boxing movie. I figured it wouldn't do much for me, so thank you for lowering my expectations.CAROLINE: Maybe that's why you liked it more than me. I didn't go in with super high expectations, but I was hoping for something good since I'd heard Mark Wahlberg had been working for years to get this movie to the big screen, and training as a boxer on and off for the last four years. I thought it was a good movie, but I wasn't bowled over by it. Far and away the best part to me was the cast and the performances.RYAN: Well, I think it should win Best Picture.CAROLINE: I'm not with you there, but I was absolutely blown away by both Christian Bale and Melissa Leo as the mom. There is no doubt in my mind that they will both get well deserved Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress Oscar nods.RYAN: Absolutely. Melissa Leo's performance was an epiphany. She stood out so far above everyone else.CAROLINE: Hello, what about Bale?? He had me riveted from the very first scene. He fully immersed himself in this character, lost weight for the role, wore fake teeth, etc. I'd hand him the Oscar myself.RYAN: We also love Amy Adams, who plays kind of a tough girl in the movie. She does some things that are so not Princess Giselle from Enchanted.CAROLINE: I thoroughly enjoyed her as always, but I didn't find this to be a transcendent role for her. Then there's Mark Wahlberg, who's perfectly good and clearly trained his butt off to play this role. The movie has been a passion project for him, and it's based on the true story of a Massachusetts boxer named Mickey Ward. But I honestly think the supporting cast was the best part about it.RYAN: Mark Wahlberg is a good actor, but he just can't compare with someone like Christian Bale. And you have to stay for at least the beginning of the credits where they show footage of the real-life brothers so you can see how Christian totally nailed the character.CAROLINE: My issue with this movie though is that it was just another boxing movie about the underdog who fights his way to the top. I wasn't bored, but I wasn't in awe either. For my money, Cinderella Man was better.RYAN: For me the boxing took such a back burner to all the other drama in the film. The boxing scenes were exciting and well shot, but the movie is also about love, family, addiction and endurance, and those were the themes that stood out to me. Also, the bit parts were cast so well too. The seven sisters were incredible! They made me die a little.CAROLINE: Yeah, they were great. I think they were a combo of real actresses and just local women who fit the bill.RYAN: I was so impressed with the film as a whole; the way the story was told, the cinematography, the costumes. It was all so real. I really liked it so much better than any of the other Oscar contenders we've seen so far.CAROLINE: I really didn't think this movie would be up your alley, but I'm glad you enjoyed it so much. It's directed by David O. Russell, who also directed one of my all-time favorite movies, Flirting With Disaster, so I'm not surprised it's a well made movie. But to me it wasn't so much a great movie as a greatly acted movie. -- BOTTOM LINE --RYAN: If you want to see a real Oscar contender, this movie should be at the top of your list. It's excellent. Granted, I did go in with lowered expectations because of what you'd told me about it, so maybe that's part of the reason I enjoyed it so much more than I'd expected to.CAROLINE: I'd recommend this movie because of its cast and the performances of Christian Bale and Melissa Leo. Unlike you, I would not put this in my top 5 favorites of the year, but many things about it make it worthy of a big screen viewing. I just feel a little bit badly for Mark Wahlberg because he worked his butt off to get this movie made, but he's gonna be the last thing people talk about when they walk out of the theater.RYAN: Mark, welcome to the world of Winona Ryder in Girl, Interrupted. -- RATING --Cheeky & Fresh Movie Reviews

LITTLE FOCKERS

CAROLINE: I was truly dreading the screening of Little Fockers, a movie I knew I would hate before I even saw it. And guess what? I was right.RYAN: I can't say I'm surprised. And I can't say I'm sad I was unable to attend the screening with you.CAROLINE: Consider yourself lucky. I knew from the trailer that the humor would be beyond juvenile, and it sure was - there were vomit jokes, penis jokes, butt jokes, you name it. Also a very Three's Company-esque "misunderstanding" between Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller that was so unfunny.RYAN: Wow, they've really sunk to new lows when they're ripping off sitcoms from the 1970s. Not that I didn't love Three's Company, mind you. How was the cast?CAROLINE: Ben Stiller was surprisingly not as annoying as he can be. But I was embarrassed for Robert De Niro all around. Some of his dialogue is so painful that I can't believe his agent didn't try to make them change the script. Owen Wilson is random and annoying, Teri Polo is just happy to be there, and Jessica Alba was actually kind of cute.RYAN: Oh yeah - I forgot she was in this. Her acting wasn't too atrosh?CAROLINE: No, it was actually a good part for her, and she played it well. She looked gorgeous, of course. Then the Fockers themselves, Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand, are in it for a bit, and they're fine. But again, I was mortified for Dustin Hoffman and what he had to do. They have him off in Spain learning flamenco dancing, and it was just so ridiculous.RYAN: It sounds horrendous. Was there anything redeeming?CAROLINE: Honestly, not really. The whole time I was just waiting for it to end. Dumb jokes and unfunny mishaps do not a good comedy make. The only thing that made it slightly tolerable was the cast. Even though the story is ridiculous, at least it's being told by decent, recognizable actors.RYAN: The crazy thing is I'm sure this movie will be a big hit for Christmas, especially with families.CAROLINE: Oh totally. I'm sure people will come out in droves to see it over the weekend, which I just can't understand. I don't think I laughed even once. And you know what's even worse? They totally set up the ending for another sequel.RYAN: Oh, my eyes! They can't do that to us.CAROLINE: It really doesn't seem fair, but I'm pretty sure it's going to happen. Teri Polo can once again thank the movie gods that she'll work again some day. -- BOTTOM LINE --CAROLINE: Please don't see this movie. It's dumb. If you like dumb, silly, juvenile humor, then you'll like it. If not, you'll lose 98 minutes of your life. Don't say I didn't warn you.-- RATING --Cheeky & Fresh Movie Reviews

RABBIT HOLE

RYAN: Almost every year Nicole Kidman makes a movie that's a bid for an Oscar nomination, and this year it's Rabbit Hole. CAROLINE: It's based on the Pulitzer Prize winning Broadway play that also won Sex and the City's Cynthia Nixon a Tony, so it had cred to begin with. I really, really liked this movie.RYAN: Nicole's co-star is Aaron Eckhart, one of our favorite actors. I loved this movie too even though it's about a couple who loses a child. It's intense and sad, but it's handled with great care and even a little comedy.CAROLINE: Fortunately, the movie takes place after the fact, so you don't have to relive the horror of the child's death. I thought I was going to weep my eyes out, but I actually didn't even shed a tear. I came close though. It's certainly emotional. But my very first thought during the first scene was "Wow, Nicole Kidman's lips are a horror! But at least she has a Botox-free forehead."RYAN: I think she times her Botox injections between filming, so then when she's out promoting a movie, she looks like a frozen ghost.CAROLINE: I'm a little bit over Nicole Kidman lately. Obviously, she's a good actress, but I think she's overexposed and slightly overrated. And she doesn't do the best American accent in this movie.RYAN: I've heard her do a better American accent, but I still love her. There's something about her that's so compelling and exquisite. She totally makes me feel something when she acts. Dianne Wiest plays her mother, and she's great as usual.CAROLINE: The whole cast is great. I really liked the girl who played Nicole's sister, and I recognized her from something.RYAN: Her name is Tammy Blanchard and she played a young Judy Garland in a TV movie several years ago.CAROLINE: There's also a teenage boy who completely blew me away. His scenes with Nicole Kidman are phenomenal and very moving.RYAN: That kid was great. Not hot at all, but so good. This movie feels like a real slice-of-life, like you're really seeing what it's like to go through a loss like this. Sandra Oh from TV's Grey's Anatomy is also in it.CAROLINE: I loved seeing her in a non-Grey's role! It's been so long, and it was awesome to see her play someone other than Christina. I think I forgot what a good actress she is. Overall, I was really impressed by this movie, because the buzz I'd heard about it was more that it was an OK movie with great acting; but I found the whole thing to be great.RYAN: Totally. It's the kind of movie that doesn't necessarily have to be seen on the big screen, but it's such great quality and such an awesome cast that it's so worth seeing. It's directed by John Cameron Mitchell, who's best known for creating and directing the indie musical, Hedwig and the Angry Inch. CAROLINE: I saw him on Broadway many years ago. He's really making a name for himself with this movie. -- BOTTOM LINE --RYAN: People might be apprehensive to see this movie because of its subject matter, and yes, you do have to buckle up for it. But it's so brilliantly written and so well cast that it's really a no regrets experience - for a mature audience, that is.CAROLINE: Yes, it's definitely for the older set. You shouldn't shy away from this movie because you think it's too sad. It's not too heavy and it's not a major weeper. Obviously the subject matter is devastating, but it's so worth seeing for really great performances and a moving story.-- RATING --Cheeky & Fresh Movie Reviews

What the Fock? Little Fockers Nabs Top Spot at Box Office

This Christmas proved to be sluggish compared to last year, representing a 44% drop in ticket sales compared to 2009. Little Fockers proved to be this year's Christmas breadwinner, bringing in a lackluster $34 million over the holiday weekend. The Coen Brothers' True Grit remake landed second with $25.6 million over the weekend, but counting its Wednesday and Thursday receipts, the film comes in at a hearty $36.8 million in its first five days. Not bad for an R-rated western. Critics' Choice Movie Awards Nominations

RYAN: The critics have spoken! And I'm proud to say we can include ourselves in that category since we are official members of the Broadcast Film Critics Association. It's not a huge surprise that Black Swan got the most nominations, with 12 total. But it's followed closely by The King's Speech and True Grit, which each have 11.CAROLINE: A lot of the people and movies we suspected would get nominated did get nominated; but I'm devastated by the complete shutting out of Shutter Island. It's one of my favorite movies of the year!RYAN: It totally sucks. But it came out in February and I think everyone forgot about it, especially since Leonardo DiCaprio was in another even bigger movie this year.CAROLINE: I know, but it's just not fair.

BLACK SWAN

RYAN: Black Swan is the film that's rumored to be the one that's going to win the Oscar for Natalie Portman as Best Actress.CAROLINE: Normally, I'm pretty skeptical of her acting abilities. I find her mediocre at best in most movies; but here she's pretty darn good.RYAN: I think her acting in this is the best of her career. It's also a very juicy role. I walked away thinking, "Wow, she can act and then some." I mean, she learned ballet for the role too, and she dances exquisitely.CAROLINE: She trained for a year to prepare for this movie, up to 8 hours a day toward the end, which is insane. She even claims to have lost 20 lbs., which doesn't seem possible off her tiny body.RYAN: The choreography in the movie is fantastic. The film is basically a metaphor for the story of Swan Lake and the screenplay is so genius. It's a riveting movie, the kind where you walk out of the theater and want to dissect it with your friends.CAROLINE: I find that I like the movie even more now that it's been a few days since I've seen it. I definitely enjoyed it while I was watching it, but I think I like it even better now, and would totally see it again. Though it's much freakier than I thought it would be, and even a little bloody.RYAN: Natalie Portman's character is obsessed with her fingers and cuticles and that makes for some pretty disturbing scenes.CAROLINE: I actually had to look away a couple times. I'd call this movie a psychological thriller, but it was even more of a thriller than I'd expected. I almost couldn't believe what I was watching sometimes. It's pretty sadistic and intense.RYAN: It's directed by Darren Aronofsky aka Rachel Weisz's ex, who's known for making groundbreaking and disturbing movies like Requiem for a Dream, and Black Swan is no exception.CAROLINE: Some people are claiming this movie is a rip-off of ballet movies from the past, but it's not like anything I've seen before. It's also got more of an indie vibe than I thought it would; hand-held cameras and such. When a movie has as much buzz as this one does, I'm usually expecting a splashy Hollywood film, but with this one I was quickly reminded that Aronofsky doesn't really make movies like that.RYAN: I'd like to laud the return of one Winona Ryder to the big screen. She's in the movie too little for my liking, but she's amazing.CAROLINE: Her part isn't huge, but it's a critical one. There's also Mila Kunis, who I think is even prettier than Natalie Portman. This is kind of her first legit dramatic role. We're used to seeing her in comedies.RYAN: She's great, and she's close friends in real life with Natalie, so that's part of the reason she's in this movie. Then there's Vincent Cassel as the ballet director, and he's kind of sexy-ugly.CAROLINE: He was perfect and hateable in this role. It's just one of those perfectly cast movies. Barbara Hershey plays Natalie Portman's psycho mom, and even though her face is terrifying, she's perfect in her role too. She almost reminded me of the mom in Carrie.RYAN: She actually looks like she could be Natalie's mom. She played the role of the overbearing stage mom so well. And the movie has some incredible special effects too, which you might not expect. And the makeup is so good!!CAROLINE: I'm starting to think you liked this movie. I totally did too, I just didn't expect it to be so creepy and disturbing. I'm glad I didn't know too much going in. -- BOTTOM LINE --RYAN: This is without a doubt one of the must see films of the year, and one of the year's best. It hits every mark and is totally on point... pun intended.CAROLINE: Nice one. I really liked it too, and would recommend it to film buffs and ballet fans and anyone who likes a true psychological thriller. It's always fascinating to me when an actor goes the extra mile to really become a character, and I think Natalie did that with this role. It's a dark, twisted movie, so see it if you like that kind of thing. I know I do.-- RATING --Cheeky & Fresh Movie Reviews

It's always a bigger take for these holiday weekends. And clearly families are going out in droves to the movies. RYAN: I'm super excited that Burlesque even blipped. It even beat out Hollywood heavyweights Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal's new movie.CAROLINE: That is quite the surprise for sure. Though I thought you'd be bummed that Burlesque didn't do better. RYAN: And although there was a lot of cizash made at the B.O. this weekend, it's still less than last year's take when Twilight: New Moon and The Blind Side were all the rage.CAROLINE: I guess Burlesque did really do well for a musical, considering last year's offering, Nine, opened only with $5 million and made a mere $20 mill in total.RYAN: I'm sure Burlesque will make at least that much. RYAN: The critics have spoken! And I'm proud to say we can include ourselves in that category since we are official members of the Broadcast Film Critics Association.

Stephen Dorff Confirms Blade Prequel, But Not Much Progress Yet

Last summer, we reported on a rumor that actor Stephen Dorff, next seen in Sofia Coppola's Somewhere, would star in a prequel spin-off to Marvel's Blade that would be about Dorff's vampire villain Deacon Frost. It was set to be a new trilogy created by filmmaker Stephen Norrington, who directed the first Blade movie but has been struggling to get anything into production recently, including The Crow reboot (which he's no longer attached to). Anyway, we've posted updates here and there, but finally have a new quote from Dorff himself. He does shed some light on the new prequel, but it doesn't sound like it's further along than before.

The new quote comes from a blog actually called Dark Lord Bunnykins (via Cinema Blend) which, believe it or not, supposedly got following quote directly from Dorff (most likely doing interviews for Somewhere). I thought the quote was informative and lengthy enough ...

Disney Making Nixed 'Museum of the Weird' Attraction into Movie

Disney has already taken attractions like Pirates of the Caribbean and a new take on The Haunted Mansion with Guillermo del Toro, but now the House of Mouse is looking at taking an attraction that never made it to the park into theaters instead. 24 Frames reports that the canceled 1960's attraction The Museum of the Weird is heading into development as a motion picture. The studio is currently talking with Ahmet Zappa (writer/actor son of musician Frank Zappa) to script the adaptation. The attraction was supposed to feature "a parade of ghostly organists, magic carts, talking chairs and other surreal exhibits." I smell an adventure!

Apparently the museum was thought of an adjunct to The Haunted Mansion, but it was never actually realized. However, there are plenty of creations from theme-park creators Rolly Crump and Clause Coats which are ripe for being retooled for a feature film. While the idea ...

All Good Things

The story of Robert Durst has been continuously swept under the rug and then resurfaced at the will of the New York District Attorney and the media. Ed Helms Heads To 'Cedar Rapids,' Parties With John C. Reilly (And Prostitutes) In New Trailer

Between his roles in "The Office" and "The Hangover," Ed Helms has sufficiently introduced the American public to his special brand of dorky, immature humor. But in his upcoming film "Cedar Rapids," he somehow manages to tweak his comedic routine just enough that it feels fresh and, well, funny.

Helms stars as a Midwestern insurance salesman [...]

YOGI BEAR

RYAN: Yogi Bear is a new movie for the kids, but honestly it felt like I was watching good quality regional children's theater.CAROLINE: [laughs] This movie features the voice talents of Dan Aykroyd as Yogi and Justin Timberlake as Boo Boo, and honestly, if I didn't know it was JT, I wouldn't have been able to tell. He totally uses a different voice. It's also part animated, part live action, which made it only slightly less painful for me to watch.RYAN: The 3D and animation is excellent; this movie is what Who Framed Roger Rabbit could only dream of being. The live actors include Anna Faris and Tom Cavanaugh from TV's Ed. CAROLINE: I was pretty embarrassed for both of them throughout the movie, especially Anna Faris who had about 6 lines and then just had to mug for the camera a lot.RYAN: But that's how people act in kids' movies. They have to overact a little. This movie really is for very young children; it's so juvenile. I like family films, but this one is really for a pre-school audience.CAROLINE: It did made me chuckle a few times, but after that I took a nap for a good 15-20 minutes.RYAN: The whole movie is only 80 minutes, so it really couldn't be shorter. The plot is cute but very thin. It's not enough to really engage you as an adult without kids accompanying you.CAROLINE: I can't say I hated it, and I'm sure kids will like it, but it's very silly with only a couple of cute, funny moments. This is the kind of movie you would only go to if you had to bring your kids to see it. It doesn't have the edge or the sarcasm of some other animated films that adults enjoy. And watching poor Tom Cavanaugh, who really hasn't gotten much work lately, play against Yogi made me sad for the state of his career.RYAN: If you're a parent with kids under 10, this movie is an option for you. But no one else needs to see it, unless you fondly remember Yogi and he's your favorite childhood character.CAROLINE: Even then you probably don't need to waste your time on this.-- BOTTOM LINE --RYAN: It's cute and the effects are very good, but it's by no means a must see. If you're taking your kids to it though, you should spring for the 3D screening. It makes it more fun.CAROLINE: This movie is for the very young. I, of course, was semi-miserable throughout the movie, but it was blessedly short which is always appreciated.-- RATING --Cheeky & Fresh Movie Reviews

The 17-Year-Old Cherry

I don’t know what it is with movies about virgins lately (okay, so it’s really justEasy Aand this movie–still, two films about the same subject released at the same time is quite considerable), but writer-director Jeffrey Fine’s aptly titledCherryputs a Mrs. Robinson-type spin on the affectable, inexperienced youth, in this case Aaron (Kyle Gallner), a [...]

THE TOURIST

RYAN: The first time Hollywood superstars Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie met was to discuss the possibility of co-starring in The Tourist, which is new in theaters today.CAROLINE: I was very excited for this movie, and will generally see anything either of them is in. But this movie is a large disappointment.RYAN: Ugh, totally. It's not enough to just take two gorgeous A-list actors and throw them in a movie together; the other elements have to be there too. This movie fails mostly because it's slow and boring and didn't really do anything for me. Plus I figured out the ending about a quarter of the way through.CAROLINE: I did not, but I was still annoyed by the ending. And after enjoying the first 20 minutes of the movie, I found myself bored. I really wasn't expecting that since the trailer was so fun. I wouldn't have been surprised if the movie was just fluffy and silly, but I really didn't think it would be dull.RYAN: From the trailer, I thought Johnny Depp's character was going to be cute and silly, which was fine. But what we got was labored dialogue and really slow scenes between the two stars where they're milking every line. And the lines aren't worthy of being milked. I kept waiting for the movie to move along or for something exciting to happen.CAROLINE: The script was definitely problematic. I'm surprised that Johnny Depp and Angelina agreed to do this movie, but they both probably wanted the paycheck and the opportunity to shoot together in Venice. They're not idiots.RYAN: The mere fact that these two are co-starring in a movie may be enough for the film to recoup its costs, but it doesn't make for a great movie; especially for it to come out this time of year during Oscar season. Now we know why there's very little buzz around it.CAROLINE: It's is not going to be well reviewed, though it still could do well at the box office due to its cast. I was surprised to see Paul Bettany in it as a cop. He's not in the trailer at all.RYAN: The other thing is, I've gotten really used to enjoying Angelina in action movies, which this is not. It's just kind of a not-very-exciting espionage movie. I don't even know if espionage is the right word, but it's certainly neither an action movie nor a thriller, and I much prefer Angelina in more action-driven films.CAROLINE: I guess it's kind of a cop chase/mistaken identity movie. It sounds more fun than it is, unfortunately. It's all very silly, and then it sort of comes together at the end, but even then I didn't buy it. I was underwhelmed.RYAN: Angelina's hair was very strange too.CAROLINE: It hangs all the way down her back like a horse's tail. Hair like that doesn't exist in nature. I'm assuming it was bad extensions.RYAN: It just looked like a really bad wig to me.CAROLINE: She also struggled walking in her high heels. Her supposedly sexy walk is highlighted in several scenes of her strolling down the street, but it looked like she was trying way too hard.RYAN: That being said, she's remarkably gorgeous and unlike anyone else. Her costumes were great too.CAROLINE: OMG she looked exactly like Audrey Hepburn in one scene! I almost gasped.RYAN: Johnny Depp looks good but not great. Maybe his hotness diminishes a little next to Angelina.CAROLINE: I thought he looked like a lady in this movie. Too much makeup, perhaps.-- BOTTOM LINE --RYAN: It's boring and way less exciting than I thought it would be. I can't really recommend it. I think I'd even be disappointed in this movie as a rental. I might turn off the DVD halfway through. But if you like these stars, you'll probably want to see it anyway.CAROLINE: I was relieved when it was over. After about an hour of it, I was praying it wouldn't be much longer than 90 minutes, which luckily it wasn't. It tries to be an exciting, mysterious, romantic movie about an adventure between two strangers in Venice, but it fails miserably. Johnny and Angelina's chemistry isn't even all that. Try harder next time, guys.-- RATING --Cheeky & Fresh Movie Reviews
