JUST GO WITH IT

CAROLINE: Just Go With It is a new deceptive romantic comedy starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston.RYAN: I didn't get to attend the screening with you; why is it deceptive?CAROLINE: Because it's actually a family comedy masquerading as a rom com, and I really didn't appreciate that. I can't believe this is the best Hollywood has to offer for Valentine's Day. Except for a cute 5 or 10 minutes toward the end, this movie is full of stupid poop jokes and almost entirely focuses on Jenny Ani's two kids.RYAN: So disappointing. We've been waiting a long time for a good new rom com. Is it predictable to boot?CAROLINE: Yeah, but that didn't bother me so much; that was actually the part I liked because it finally got convincingly romantical at the end and it made me happy. The fact that I'm supposed to buy Adam Sandler and Brooklyn Decker as a couple is ridonk. And Adam Sandler has a stupid sidekick who does a fake German accent the whole time, plus the kids are kind of annoying... if it weren't for the totally predictable ending that I liked, this movie would be a waste of time.RYAN: Sounds like it's got stupid juvenile humor.CAROLINE: Totally. I think that's all Adam Sandler is capable of these days. I don't know what happened to his cute rom com roles like in 50 First Dates and The Wedding Singer.RYAN: He's definitely heading toward the family film genre in the last few years. It's kind of the same path that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson seems to be following.CAROLINE: I didn't completely hate it because I like the two lead actors, but it's mostly a groaner full of dumb jokes. And I was surprised at how much it centered around the kids.RYAN: Is Jennifer Aniston capable of picking a good movie anymore?CAROLINE: That's unclear. But you would have loved the substantial cameo from Nicole Kidman. She does an over-the-top American accent and is actually pretty campy and funny. I'm not used to seeing her in roles like this.RYAN: I love it! She's reason enough for me to see this movie. What's the nature of her character?CAROLINE: She plays Jenny Ani's college nemesis, and Dave Matthews plays her husband, which was a surprise. But please don't bother seeing this movie in the theater; I only give you permission to rent it. It has a couple of funny moments, but I rarely laughed out loud. Jennifer Aniston looks great though, and Brooklyn Decker is gorgeous, of course.RYAN: How's the length?CAROLINE: It's a bit too long at nearly two hours. It didn't drag per se, but I was constantly rolling my eyes at the lame jokes. I wanted it to be smarter and more romantic and certainly funnier. I expected a little more from Jennifer Aniston, but maybe I shouldn't anymore.RYAN: Jenny Ani needs to take the advice of some actress I just read about - I think it was Mandy Moore - who said something like, "I'm going to be smarter about the kinds of roles I choose and not take just any dumb romantic comedy that comes my way." Listen up, Jenny! Mandy is actually making sense.-- BOTTOM LINE --CAROLINE: This movie has a few sweet moments, and I loved the ending because I'm cheesy like that. Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler have surprisingly good chemistry. For someone who's not traditionally handsome, Adam Sandler can be very sweet as a romantic lead. But it's not remotely funny enough and the jokes are silly and geared at kids. It's a rental at best, and that's being generous.-- RATING --Cheeky & Fresh Movie Reviews

Disney Scraps Robert Zemeckis' Yellow Submarine

UPDATE:  Disney denies that it decided to scrap the Yellow Submarine project after Mars Needs Moms tanked at the box office.  According to Deadline, a spokesperson for Disney says the company decided to cancel the film long before Mars Needs Moms was even released. Mars Needs Moms did so poorly at the box office this weekend, Disney decided to scrap producer Robert Zemeckis' next project for the studio, Yellow Submarine. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the high profile remake of the classic Beatles film Yellow Submarine has been in the pipeline for a while, but hasn't really moved forward.  The film has been wracked with problems, including budget issues and a failed attempt to sit down with the Beatles heirs to discuss the project. Zemeckis produced the latest Disney flick Mars Needs Moms, which cost the studio $150 million to make, it made a measly $6.9 million at the box office this weekend. The plan for Yellow Submarine was apparently to use 16 Beatles songs into the film and use the cutting edge motion-capture technology that was used in Zemerckis' films Beowolf, Christmas Carole, and Mars Needs Moms.  Apparently the technology isn't catching on as well as they had expected.  Most people describe the technology as "creepy" or "weird" and the results are reflective of that.

Marisa Tomei and Sarah Jessica Parker Are 'Married and Cheating'

She's already had plenty of romantic adventures in New York and Paris in both the Sex and the City films and series, but now Sarah Jessica Parker is taking on an indie comedy which follows romance in both the locations. Variety reports Parker and Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler) will both star in Married and Cheating, a film that follows three married couples struggling to find happiness. Raymond De Felitta, who most recently helmed the overlooked, but mostly enjoyable dysfunctional family comedy City Island is set to write & direct. Apparently the deals are completely done yet, but both actresses are expected to close soon.

Honestly, I don't really pay much attention to Parker's antics anymore after Sex and the City and the absolutely disastrous "comedy" Did You Hear About the Morgans?, so that's not really doing anything for me. As for Tomei, she had a disappointing and incomplete character in Salvation ...

UNKNOWN

CAROLINE: I was very excited to see the new Liam Neeson movie, Unknown, since Mr. Neeson has proven himself to be a great film badass and the trailer was so good. Or at least good for a February release.RYAN: I loved this trailer and am so bummed I couldn't attend the screening with you. Please tell me it was good!CAROLINE: I really wish I could. It started out OK - not as gripping as Taken, but decent. I was never fully engaged though... and then by the second half, it just got lame.RYAN: Ugh. I'm so disappointed! Was there good action at least?CAROLINE: Yeah, there were a couple of cool car chases and stuff. I definitely was on the edge of my seat a few times. But it's mostly just the kind of movie we'd expect to come out this time of year. OK, but nothing great. And it just got sillier as the movie progressed.RYAN: How's January Jones?CAROLINE: I'm not convinced she can act. She's very cold and bitchy, which is what the role requires, but I'm not sold on her. Then there's Diane Kruger as the woman who gets implicated in Liam Neeson's whole stolen identity thing, and she's good.RYAN: Isn't Frank Langella in it too?CAROLINE: He is, but only briefly at the end. By the time he came around, people were starting to laugh at the preposterous dialogue.RYAN: Oh no. That's never a good sign.CAROLINE: Maybe I went in with too high expectations since the trailer was so good. But once you find out what's actually going on, and why Liam's identity has been stolen, it's just not that great a reveal. I was already on the fence about the movie at that point, and the weak second half just made it worse. I was almost thinking I could recommend this movie just because it's a slow time of year for film, but I can't say it's a must see at all.RYAN: I can't believe I Am Number Four is the better movie this week!CAROLINE: I know! Who would have thought?-- BOTTOM LINE --CAROLINE: What could have been another fun, action-filled February flick like Taken turns out to be pretty lame. It started off OK, but got weaker as it went along. Liam Neeson is still a badass, but not nearly as much as he was in Taken. I'm underwhelmed.-- RATING --Cheeky & Fresh Movie Reviews
