Hugh Grant Joining the Impressive Cast of Wachowskis' 'Cloud Atlas'

With a cast that already includes the likes of Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Ben Whishaw, Keith David, David Gyas and Susan Sarandon, you'd think that the Wachowski siblings and Tom Tykwer would be done rounding up talent for their adaptation of Cloud Atlas. However, Screen Daily has word that Hugh Grant is now signing on to join the big screen version of David Mitchell's complex novel of the same name. The project is certainly much more promising than his last big screen endeavor, the painfully generic romantic comedy Did You Hear About the Morgans?

Likely Grant will be taking on multiple roles like the rest of the cast as the story follows six plot threads across time?a 19th century notary on a Pacific expedition, a bisexual musician in the 1930s, a female journalist in a thriller in 1970s California, an ...

Trailer Tuesdays!

RYAN: We've got the opposite ends of the spectrum this Trailer Tuesdays - a very rated R comedy and a sequel for the kids.

CAROLINE: Let's start with Bad Teacher, which is one of my most anticipated movies of the summer. When I first heard about it, and the whole Cameron Diaz starring opposite her ex Justin Timberlake thing, I was not that interested. But then I saw the red band trailer and couldn't believe how hilarious it looked!

RYAN: Really? For me it's like, "Oh look, JT & Cameron Diaz together again." I think it could be a good role for her but everything that happens in the trailer is completely implausible. No teacher would get away with what she does.

CAROLINE: Honey, you can't suspend your disbelief for a silly summer comedy?!

RYAN: I promise I will try. And it's probably among the most pop culture-worthy flicks of the summer since it teams up the exes.

CAROLINE: It co-stars Jason Segel, whom I enjoy, and the funny fat lady from The Office. It just looks laugh-out-loud funny to me. We'll show the regular trailer here, but if you're old enough to watch the red band one, I highly recommend it.

RYAN: Yeah, that one's pretty shockingly funny, but the normal one is cute too. Check it out here:

CAROLINE: Next ups is Cars 2, yet another movie this year featuring Owen Wilson. Thankfully this time it's just his voice.

RYAN: I so don't care about this movie. I didn't see the first one in the theater, but watched the DVD with my niece and nephew. They enjoyed it, but I'm more a fan of the Disney Princess varietals, LBH.

CAROLINE: Happily, I never saw the first one and have no intention of seeing this one either. But for those who are interested, it's also got the voices of Michael Caine, Bonnie Hunt, John Turturro and Larry the Cable Guy.

RYAN: Not exactly A-list talent, huh? I'm surprised it's taken them 5 years to make this sequel. But I guess animated movies are time consuming and costly to make. Plus this one's in 3D.

CAROLINE: I hope the kids enjoy it. I can't even be bothered to figure out if there's a plot. Something about a car race maybe? See for yourself and watch the trailer here:

COWBOYS & ALIENS

RYAN: I?ve been so anxiously awaiting this movie because it has such a stacked deck: Harrison Ford, Daniel Craig, Jon Favreau, Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer!

CAROLINE: That is some kind of Hollywood dream team.

RYAN: Right? And it?s an entertaining film but it?s just not great.

CAROLINE: Why?

RYAN: The story isn?t strong enough. The casting is waymazing. It?s pretty well shot and the effects are cool but the storytelling is just off.

CAROLINE: Is it like Cowboys and Indians but Cowboys and Aliens?

RYAN: Completely. I?m all for a genre blur, when it?s successful. In this case, they try to make the Sci Fi genre blend into the Western and it would have been better if it were more evenly mixed.

CAROLINE: Can you be more specific?

RYAN: Without giving too much away, it basically turns out that the aliens are after gold, so it really cheesifies would could have been a much cooler plot point and while the aliens are gross and scary and evil enough, I just don?t like how they?re forced into the simple wild-westness of the gold rush.

CAROLINE: Fair enough. How?s Olivia Wilde as the obligatory damsel in distress?

RYAN: She?s fine. She?s gorgeous in a very plain way.

CAROLINE: She?s pretty. And quite the score for her resume with this one.

RYAN: I tend to not like Westerns but do like Sci Fi and maybe since it got the short end of the stick, that?s why I was less jazzed during this.

CAROLINE: I don?t blame you. I?m not a huge fan of either genre.

RYAN: Oh and can I just say new rule for movie-going: Do not bring in fragrant food from outside!

CAROLINE: Oh no! What happened?

RYAN: Some broad next to me reached into her very loud bag in the middle of the movie and pulled out the worst-smelling fish o? the world. I almost died. I sat there for an hour sniffing into my box of mints.

CAROLINE: That?s heinous, inappropriate and rude.

RYAN: It might be one to see on the big screen since it?s of the summer blockbuster type, so I recommend it there if you?re into Westerns. Otherwise you could live without it... just just catch it on TV someday.

BAD TEACHER

RYAN: I didn't get to attend the Bad Teacher screening a few weeks ago, but I love that you shelled out your own $13 to see it.

CAROLINE: Make that $13.50, honey.

RYAN: Are you serious?

CAROLINE: Ridiculous, right? But I wanted to check it out because I enjoy the cast - Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel, Justin Timberlake, Phyllis from The Office and the very funny Lucy Punch.

RYAN: And did it deliver?

CAROLINE: It definitely made me laugh out loud several times. I saw it in a pretty empty theater so it's hard to gauge the comedy level since there was no one else to LOL with. But I was amused.

RYAN: How was JT?

CAROLINE: Honestly, I'm still on the fence with him as an actor. He's fine, but he still feels a little stiff to me, like he's trying too hard or something. He's not terrible, but he's not the world's most natural actor.

RYAN: I tend to agree. What about the rest of the cast?

CAROLINE: They're all good. I totally forgot that Lucy Punch was in it so that was a pleasant surprise; and you'd never know she's British.

RYAN: She's a true chameleon that way.

CAROLINE:
The redband trailer was so great for this movie and it does deliver on a lot of punch lines, but some of the profanity felt gratuitous. Like, isn't it funny to have a hot blond saying all these nasty words? It still made me laugh, but the comedy felt a little forced sometimes.

RYAN: Do you get to see Cameron and JT make out?

CAROLINE: No, but they have a dry humping scene if you must know.

RYAN: How random! I'll have to see that for myself someday.

-- BOTTOM LINE --

CAROLINE: It's a funny movie, but nothing spectacular. I'm glad I saw it because I like the cast a lot, but it's not a must-see summer comedy. I think Bridesmaids is going to be the best comedy of this summer, LBH. But you'd be happy to catch Bad Teacher on cable some lazy weekend.
