Dustin Hoffman Making Directorial Debut with British Drama 'Quartet'

After working with some of the finest filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg, Sydney Pollack, and Mike Nichols, Oscar-winning actor Dustin Hoffman is ready to try his hand at directing. In a press release from BBC Films and DCM Productions, it was revealed that Hoffman will be at the helm of an adaptation of Ronald Harwood's stage play Quartet. In addition, Hoffman has assembled some impressive talent for the adaptation including Maggie Smith, Billy Connolly, Tom Courtenay, Pauline Collins, Sheridan Smith and Michael Gambon starring in the film which began production in Britain today.

CRAZY STUPID LOVE

RYAN: It?s the first movie we?ve made it to together in a while and what a nice one to see together.

CAROLINE: Crazy Stupid Love is one of the movies I really wanted to see this summer. It stars Steve Carell and bevy of others including Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Marisa Tomei and Kevin Bacon. And I?m so thrilled I got to see it because I loved it.

RYAN: It?s great dramedy. And though it?s not a little indie movie, had it come out later in the year, it could have gone the route of Little Miss Sunshine or Juno. The writing, casting, all good.

CAROLINE: It?s one of those I-laughed-I-cried-movies for sure. I was weeping, possibly even more than I laughed. But I did LOL several times. Steve can do no wrong in my eyes. Ryan is just hot. It has a couple silly, over-the-top moments of a broad comedy but I can forgive that.

RYAN: It?s a really attractive cast. Marisa Tomei seems to never age. Ryan Gosling?s body is sick. And I love Emma Stone?s career now. She seems to be having so much fun.

CAROLINE: Totally.

RYAN: There are some surprises, which I always like in a movie. It?s such a heartwarming movie.

CAROLINE: I appreciate that it can be funny and sweet at the same time. That?s rare. It?s got a great message about love and family and what?s important while being hilarious.

RYAN: You definitely feel the stakes on the line for theses characters? love lives. Kevin Bacon is always great. I love a good makeover story and this one is funny but I wish it had been a bit more dramatic. Steve Carell basically gets new shoes.

CAROLINE: [laughs] And it?s fun to see a guy-on-guy makeover.

RYAN: I also really noticed the mix in set design. The bar and Ryan?s pad are very cool and then you see complete suburbia on the other end.

CAROLINE: The costumes too.

RYAN: And Josh Groban.

CAROLINE: Yeah ? hi. What was that about? And his hair was the worst hair I?d every seen which is just kinda how his hair is, I guess. Is he trying to pull a Justin Timberlake 'cause I don?t think it?s going to work. He?s not bringin? sexy back, let?s just say.

RYAN: [laughs]

CAROLINE: I really, really liked this movie. I think it?s more heartwarming than I expected it to be but super funny and pitch perfect casting. I'm so glad we got to see it together.

RYAN: It?s very sweet and romantic; gave me some ideas. It?s a good night at the movies. Who doesn?t enjoy a good dramedy?

Russell Crowe to Sing, Seek Justice in Les Miserables Remake

He can fight off fellow Gladiators, he can solve difficult math equations and, in 2013, he'll prove that he can give birth to iconic superheroes.

But can Russell Crowe really sing? Movie goers are about to find out.

The Oscar winner, who fronts the band 30 Odd Foot of Grunts, has signed on to star as Inspector Javert in Tom Hooper's big screen adaption of Les Miserables. Crowe will be chasing down Hugh Jackman's Jean Valjean - prisoner 24601, of course - in the big screen version of the beloved musical.

The film will be released on December 7, 2012 and penned by William Nicholson, the writer behind the the long-running play, which itself is based on Victor Hugo's 1862 novel.

James McTeigue To Helm Prohibition Era Crime Drama 'Ness/Capone'

Relativity Media just finished working with V for Vendetta director James McTeigue on the period mystery thriller The Raven with John Cusack as Edgar Allen Poe (a project that didn't really impress me much at Comic-Con earlier this year). Now the production company will reunite with the filmmaker as Deadline reports McTeigue has been set to direct Ness/Capone, a new period crime drama written by Grant Pierce Myers which made the 2010 Black List. The film is said to put a new spin on the well-known rivalry between American Prohibition agent Elliot Ness and infamous mobster Al Capone in the 1920's.

Though Ness and his exploits as the leader of agents who came to be known as The Untouchables were chronicled the in the 1987 film of the same name starring Kevin Costner, this film is said to follow the battle between Ness and Capone with more shades of gray. Ness ...

Fox Searchlight Acquires Steve McQueen's 'Shame' for US Distribution

Oh hell yes! I had a feeling this might happen! One of our favorite indie distributors, Fox Searchlight, has taken a very bold move and acquired the controversial and provocative new film from Hunger director Steve McQueen titled Shame. I saw the film at the Telluride Film Festival (where the Fox Searchlight execs were too) and absolutely loved it (read my review), even though I didn't like Hunger much, but I felt that it needed a very brave, bold distributor who could actually give this film the push it deserves. So great to see that Fox Searchlight, who put out Black Swan and 127 Hours just last year, is the one picking this up.
