SOMETHING BORROWED
CAROLINE: It's total chick lit/beach read material. Trashy, but enjoyable. Kinda like the movie, I suppose.
RYAN: It stars Kate Hudson, Ginnifer Goodwin and John Krasinski from The Office. And can I just offer some free advice to Ms. Hudson? Next time you choose a romantic comedy, please read the script first. And if it doesn't require you to do something you haven't done before, just pass.
CAROLINE: I didn't think it was that bad, but I definitely hear you on the Kate thing. Girlfriend needs to branch out immediately.
RYAN: She's not bad at all in the role, and she's still one of the cutest things in the universe; but I'm almost at the point with her that we are with Will Ferrell or Ben Stiller - like, "OK, we get it. What else can you do?"
CAROLINE: Yeah, it's a little odd that her agents aren't forcing her in a new direction, because I do think she's a capable actress. And I'm sorry, but I just don't love Ginnifer Goodwin. There's something stiff and awkward about her, epecially when compared to Kate Hudson, who's so cute and bubbly in these kinds of roles.
RYAN: She's definitely not as engaging as Kate, but I still find her very likable and talented. I feel overall there were a lot of missed opportunities in this film. Whenever the plot began to engage me and go in a direction I thought it would, it totally deflated.
CAROLINE: The script felt little stilted at times. It's by no means a great rom com, though it did have some fun moments. I enjoyed watching it, but it definitely could have been better.
RYAN: I also didn't love the flashback device they used. It was so literal.
CAROLINE: But I loved all the on-location shots of New York City. Great street shots, bars I recognized, etc... and Shake Shack! So fun.
RYAN: Agreed! The lead love interest guy looks like Tom Cruise lite. He never seemed to really commit, even though he had the eyes-welling-up-with-tears bit down.
CAROLINE: I thought the premise is fun and interesting, and while not necessarily 100% relatable, it's definitely something you could see happening in real life. One thing that totally bugged me though is how much money they all seemed to have. I mean, they're supposed to be 30 and they have an insane Hamptons beachfront summer rental? Please!
RYAN: Sorry I've never invited you to mine, honey. Maybe this year you can come.
CAROLINE: [laughs] I'll be eagerly awaiting my invitation.
-- BOTTOM LINE --
RYAN: It's a cute movie and at times unpredictable and clever, but overall clich and even a little boring. It felt too long even at only an hour and 50 minutes. It's not a truly great romantic comedy.
CAROLINE: Honestly, it's a rental. It might have been better for this movie to come out around Valentine's Day. It would have been a good movie to get us out of the winter doldrums. I liked it enough, but it's not memorable.

THE TREE OF LIFE
RYAN: I was excited for the Brad Pitt and Sean Penn aspect, but didn't get to see this with you. How was it?
CAROLINE: I don't want to say I was disappointed, but I really didn't love it. First of all, Sean Penn is in it for all of 10 minutes and he barely utters a word.
RYAN: Ew, that's annoying.
CAROLINE: It's all about Brad Pitt, the redhead who plays his wife and his three sons, who are great. But the movie is... weird.
RYAN: How so?
CAROLINE: It's very moody and contemplative. It doesn't really follow a narrative per se, though it's mostly about this one family in the '50s. Brad Pitt is a very strict father whose kids both love and hate/fear him. The big problem is the length - about 2 hours and 20 minutes.
RYAN: Ugh, way too long.
CAROLINE: Totally. And I'd say about 30 minutes of that is basically a Discovery Channel special. A gorgeously shot one, but a Discovery Channel special nonetheless.
RYAN: Say what?
CAROLINE: I know. It's totally weird. There's a 20 minute stretch that is literally just scenes of waterfalls, animals, jellyfish floating in the ocean, rivers flowing, flowers, etc. I was like, seriously?
RYAN: I'm sure there was some point the director was trying to make, but it sounds strange.
CAROLINE: My thoughts exactly. He was trying to make a commentary on the origins of the earth or something - there's even a scene with CGI dinosaurs - but it was lost on me. Maybe I just didn't get it, but it wasn't a particularly enjoyable movie. The performances were good, but I didn't like the structure. And then at the end, it's just a scene of people wandering around a beach for a while. I think it's supposed to be heaven, but who knows.
RYAN: It all sounds very symbolic.
CAROLINE: It was a little too artsy for me, though it was beautifully shot. Maybe I wanted something more straightforward. Not that I can't handle a movie with a different kind of format; I just didn't love this one.
-- BOTTOM LINE --
CAROLINE: This movie isn't for everyone, and wasn't really even for me. Brad Pitt is good, but it's just odd overall. I wasn't really feeling the director's vision. And it's just way too long; all those nature scenes were too much. It's not at all something you need to see in the theater. I think Terrence Malick has made much better movies. You only need to see this if you're a die-hard fan of his.

WATER FOR ELEPHANTS
RYAN: It stars Oscar winners Christoph Waltz and Reese Witherspoon as a married couple in a traveling circus in the '30s, as well as Robert Pattinson of Twilight fame.
CAROLINE: This definitely feel like a "very serious movie." It's a period piece, and the Depression plays a big role in the film. Overall, I enjoyed it, but I didn't realize it was going to be so heavy, especially at the end.
RYAN: I was unable to attend the screening with you but definitely want to see this one. You know how much I love Reese. How is she?
CAROLINE: She's great. First and foremost, she looks great; awesome hair, cool costumes, all very '30s. She gets to do all these tricks with horses and elephants, though sometimes it was clearly a body double.
RYAN: How's her chemistry with R. Pattinson?
CAROLINE: Well, she's married to Christoph Waltz, who's once again the villain, a role he always plays deliciously. But she does have some simmer with R. Patz that goes pretty well. They're not sizzling up the screen or anything, but I bought it.
RYAN: And how's the elephant?
CAROLINE: [laughs] She's good. Very well trained. There were a few times where I was like, "Whoa, did Reese really just do that stunt with an elephant or did they green screen it? Because it looks really freaking dangerous." Perhaps we'll never know.
RYAN: Do you think all the Robert Pattinson fans will want to rush out and see it?
CAROLINE: Honestly, it's a very mature film; I'm not sure that 'tweens and teens will like it. Our parents definitely would though. I think Robert P. is playing it very smart by doing other kinds of movies while Twilight is still in the works. That way he's not pigeonholed as the guy who can only do Twilight and nothing else.
RYAN: It's a good career move, for shizz. I'm really looking forward to seeing this one. Should I pay 13 bucks to see it in the theater?
CAROLINE: If you did I doubt you'd regret it, but it's not necessarily a must-see on the big screen. It's very well shot and very adult but it's not like it's got action or CGI that requires a big screen viewing.
-- BOTTOM LINE --
CAROLINE: I liked this movie. I didn't adore it, but it maintained my interest throughout and the cast is great. I liked the circus aspect and the animals. It's definitely heavy; possibly over-the-top at times, but not enough to really bother me. Fans of the book will definitely want to see it and everyone else can decide if they'd rather wait for it to be on cable. Get ready for some drama.

Trailer Tuesdays!
CAROLINE: Ugh, me neither. Starting with Fast Five - seriously, people? Hasn't this franchise worn out its welcome?
RYAN: Not if there's still money to be made! This one introduces Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to the franchise and brings back the usual suspects, Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Jordana Brewster. I can't believe this franchise is 10 years old already.
CAROLINE: I can't believe we're still talking about it. It's guns, cars, violence and explosions; a total boy movie. I'm sure it'll have an audience of teen dudes but for the rest of us, it's not even a blip on the radar. Check out the trailer here:
RYAN: Next up is Prom, a Disney movie that actually looks a little bit cute.
CAROLINE: Yeah, I'd totally see this movie for free, but sadly I won't; it screened on the same night as Water for Elephants last week.
RYAN: It's a cast full of nobodies, except for one girl from Friday Night Lights, which is fine for a movie like this. But to me it looks like a made-for-TV movie than one for the big screen.
CAROLINE: I hear you. Though I must admit that upon seeing the trailer for the first time, it brought me back to my high school years and the prom-related angst that we all go through.
RYAN: Oh, totally. It looks like a rental to me now, but if I were in high school or middle school, I'm sure I'd be all over it. Watch the trailer here:
RYAN: Finally, there's Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil, an animated film that's a sequel.
CAROLINE: I don't think I've seen one ad for this movie on TV. How's it possibly going to compete with Rio and Hop?
RYAN: Honey, it's not remotely a contender. I saw the first Hoodwinked in 2005 and I'm shocked they even made a sequel. I hated the first one so much; it bored me and actually made me a bit ill. It's like watching a roller coaster - but not like Ice Age and not like on a ride at Disney World either.
CAROLINE: At the very least it does feature the voices of some actors we like - Bill Hader, Amy Poehler, Glenn Close and Martin Short. But that's all I can say about it.
RYAN: It's got a lot of characters from fairy tales like Hansel and Gretel, Red Riding Hood and the Three Little Pigs. Other than that, I know very little about this movie and plan on keeping it that way. Watch the trailer here:

Jesse Eisenberg, Jake Gyllenhaal in Talks for Now You See Me
Jesse Eisenberg is in talks to star in Now You See Me directed by Louis Leterrier, according to Variety. The magazine also reports that Jake Gyllenhaal might be in talks to appear as well.
The film is based on a crack FBI squad who ends up in a game of cat and mouse with a team of the illusionists. The team pulls of a series of bank heists during their performances and distributes the profits among the audience.
No word on what role Eisenberg or Gyllenhaal are in talks to play, but it would be awesome to see Eisenberg as one of the illusionists. He has such a funny deadpan performance style that would work great.
Gyllenhaal meanwhile, would do great as either a member of the FBI or a member of the illusionists. He's proven himself in both funny and serious roles.
Gyllenhaal just appeared in the sci-fi thriller Source Code and Eisenberg recently received a lot of press for his role as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network.

CAROLINE: Ugh. It's enough already with this franchise - seriously.
RYAN: I have only one word - MERMAIDS! I'm so excited for this movie.
RYAN: OK, the second one wasn't great, but I loved the first and third, and I have great hopes for this one. Jack Sparrow is one of Depp's best roles... and it's in 3D! This should be super fun. Plus welcome to the team, Penny Cruz.
CAROLINE: I can barely watch the trailer in its entirety. It looks so dumb to me, and totally for kids.
RYAN: Well, honey, it's Disney.
CAROLINE: How is it that Penelope Cruz still can't shake that accent of hers? You'd think her English would have improved at least ever so slightly by this point.
RYAN: [laughs] I know, right? But I'm looking forward to seeing the chemistry between her and Johnny Depp. And I'm psyched that Geoffrey Rush is back and eager to see Ian McShane as Blackbeard. That's some good casting.
CAROLINE: All I remember about the previous movies in this franchise is that they're very long and I'm counting the minutes till they're over. I'm sure this one will be no exception; if I can even bother to make it to the screening with you.
RYAN: I hope you do! I think it's gonna be great. Watch the trailer here:

CAROLINE: I don't know that I'm quite as jazzed about it as you are, but it's definitely intriguing. I'm a J.J. Abrams supporter and have watched all of his TV shows - even Undercovers, I'm sad to admit.
RYAN: It's gonna be like The Goonies for a new generation. You know I love sci-fi and I think the marriage of J.J. directing and Steven Spielberg producing is long overdue!
CAROLINE: It's definitely a great collaboration. I dig that the movie takes place in the '70s; that gives it an interesting look. I don't really care about aliens, but at least this one looks very different from Battle: Los Angeles.
RYAN: It stars lil' Elle Fanning, sister of Dakota, and the dude from Friday Night Lights. Count me in! Check out the trailer here:
CAROLINE: Next up is a movie that appears to be for little girls. I might have been into it as a 'tween, who are we kidding?
RYAN: It's called Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer. Whimsical title, no?
CAROLINE: It's based on a popular book series, so you can't blame them for the title.
RYAN: Why not just make some big screen adaptations of a Judy Blume book? Who wouldn't love Are you there God, it's Me Margaret?
CAROLINE: Honey, the real tragedy here is that this stars Heather Graham as Aunt Opal. I guess now we know what she's been up to.
RYAN: So sad. How the mighty have fallen.
CAROLINE: Indeed. Clearly this movie isn't for us, but if I had a 'tween daughter, I'd take her to see it. Watch the trailer here:

The Lone Ranger Gets Christmas 2012 Release Date
The Disney remake of the TV series The Lone Ranger, starring Armie Hammer as the title character and Johnny Depp as his sidekick Tonto, will hit theaters on December 21, 2012.
That's quite a long way away from now, but it's Johnny Depp -- so it should be worth the wait.
The film will be directed with long-time Depp collaboration Gore Verbinski (he directed Depp in both Rango and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest).
Big name director and big name producer -- Jerry Bruckheimer will be producing the film set against the old Wild West.
The Lone Ranger is never seen without his mask and is the survivor of an ambush on six Texas Rangers by an armed gang -- all but one is left dead. The story started out on the radio in the 1930s and ended up as television specials in 1949 and 1957.
Stay tune to Reel Movie News for more updates on this film as they become available.
